Why is my favicon not showing in Google?

Google needs a square icon in a supported format (ICO, PNG, GIF, JPEG or BMP, not SVG), declared on the homepage, with both the homepage and the icon open to Googlebot in robots.txt. After a fix it takes days to weeks before Google shows the new icon. Ten causes and fixes →

Which favicon files does a site really need?

A 32×32 favicon.ico, an SVG icon, a 180×180 Apple touch icon and a web app manifest with 192 and 512 px icons, one of them maskable. That covers every current browser, phone and Google Search. The full size chart →

I changed my favicon, why do I still see the old one?

Browsers keep favicons in a cache of their own that a normal reload does not clear. Give the icon a new URL, for example favicon.svg?v=2, and check that your server and CDN send the new file. How to clear the favicon cache →

Does Google support SVG favicons?

No. Google's favicon guidelines list BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM and TIFF. Keep the SVG for browsers and declare a PNG or ICO next to it; Google recommends one larger than 48×48 px.

What is a maskable icon?

A manifest icon marked "purpose": "maskable" whose artwork fills the whole square. Android crops it to the shape of the phone's icons, so the logo has to sit inside the central 80% circle.
